Green Dot Public Schools is leading the charge to transform public education in Los Angeles and beyond so that all children receive the education they need to be successful in college, leadership, and life. With Green Dot's success to date, we are demonstrating that public schools can do a far better job of educating students if they are operated more effectively. Green Dot envisions a public school system in L.A. made up of small, excellent schools that encourage and welcome parental involvement and opinions, support teacher effectiveness, and educate students at their highest and best levels, no matter what their background. Green Dot operates nineteen successful charter high schools in some of the highest need areas of Los Angeles, demonstrating that public schools can do a far better job of educating students if they are operated more effectively.
Green Dot is focused on leading "School Transformation" projects in which it restructures large, failing schools into several small, successful schools. Successful School Transformations will provide educators around the nation with a model that can be used to improve under-performing schools. Most notably, Green Dot now operates Alain Leroy Locke High School in the historic Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, a school that in recent years graduated less than 25% of its entering ninth-grade class, and where less than 5% of students went on to attend four-year colleges. By contrast, Green Dot graduates 75% or more of its students, and over 70% go on to four-year colleges, with almost all the rest attending community colleges. Green Dot has restructured Locke into nine separate small schools, and the results so far are early but dramatic: 35% more students proficient in English and math; dropout rate reduced by 80%; a calm, revitalized campus; and a school culture where students and learning is the top priority.
